1.AEddie McKay, a once-forgotten pilot, is a subject of great interest to a group of history students in Canada. It all started when Graham Broad, a professor at the University of Western Ontario, found McKay’s name in a footnote in a book about university history. McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友) who had served during the First World War, but his name was unfamiliar to Broad, a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity, Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆) in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged, he finally gave up. On his way out, Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture, he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find, Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually, a picture came into view.Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron (中队) as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the most famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.” Yet, in a letter home, McKay refused to take credit, saying that Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane.McKay’s war records were destroyed during a World War II air bombing on London — an explanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students, a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in November 2007. “I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word ‘deceased’ (阵亡) next to his name,” said Corey Everrett, a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us, but instead of finishing his time at Western, he chose to fight and die for his country.”56. What made Professor Broad continue his search for more information on McKay?A. A uniform. of McKay. B. A footnote about McKay.C. A book on McKay. D. A picture of McKay.

3.For any Englishman there can never be any discussion as to who is the world's greatest writer. Only one name can possibly suggest itself to him:that of William Shakespeare.Every Englishman has some knowledge of his work. All of us use words and phrases from Shakespeare's writings that have become a part of the English-speaking people.Shakespeare, more perhaps than any other writer, made full use of the English language. Most of us use about five thousand words in our normal employment of English; Shakespeare in his works used about twenty-five thousand! There is probably no better way for a foreigner (or an Englishman!) to appreciate the richness and variety of the English language than by studying the various ways in which Shakespeare uses it. Such a study is well worth the effort (it is not, of course, recommended to beginners), even though some aspects of English usage, and the meaning of many words, have changed since Shakespeare's day.1). From the first two sentences of the passage we can conclude that ________.A. it can't be discussed about who is the world's greatest dramatistB. Shakespeare is regarded as the greatest writerC. Lawyers protesting about cuts don't attract the same level of public support as doctors and nurses. What goes on in the courts is not widely understood, and most people do not expect to neecl a publicly funded lawyer in the way that they rely on hospitals.Nevertheless, access to justice is a fundamental democratic right, and the chaos and failure unfolding across the legal system as the result of cuts should concern everyone who cares about justice.Research carried out by civil servants and published in May after it was leaked shows that the disruptive effect of legal aid cuts in England and Wales has spread from the civil courts to the criminal courts:where increasing numbers of clefendants are appearing without legal advice or representation,as a consequence of changes including new means tests.More than half of juclges questioned for the study voiced concerns about defendants not understanding that a guilty plea could lead to a reducecl sentence. The government knows there is a problem.not least because the王950m reduction in the legal aid bill in 2016,compared with 2010,was more than twice as much as it expected. But ministers have already clelayed far too long in the face of clear evidence that cuts in the family courts have been harmful.Official figures show that the proportion of plaintif{s and defendants with legal representation fell from 60%in 2012 t0 33%in the first quarter of last year, and it is not uncommon for one party in a civil case to be represented by a lawyer while the other is not. Some sensible changes have already been suggested in a review commissioned by the Labour party last year. These include a loosening of the criteria for legal aid eligibility to include all cases involving children, and representation for families in inquests where the state is already funding one party such as the police-which represents an essential rebalancing of justice's scales. The report also made the not unreasonable suggestion that law should be taught in schools.Avoiding costly lawsuits by encouraging people to treat court as a last resort sounds reasonable, and some of the consequences of the cuts were no doubt unintended. But the"simpler"and"more responsive"system promised by the Conservative justice secretary Ken Clarke when embarking on these cost-saving measures in 2010 now looks like wishful thinking at best. The current justice secretary,David Gauke, must act to restore confidence in a damaged system.Legal aid began in the UK in the 1940s with the rest of the welfare state. In the US,a defendant's entittement to a lawyer in a criminal case is enshrined in an amendment to the constitution. While the rules in the UK may lack this constitutional underpinning, people are still entitled to access to justice-including lawyers paid for with legal aid.

When British TV chef Jamie Oliver launched his‘Feed Me Better'campaign in 2004 in schools in the Greenwich area of London with the aim of improving the diet of British schoolchildren, some people were skeptical about the impact it would have.Oliver's highly-publicized television campaign to improve school lunches led to dramatic changes in the meals offered to pupils in the Greenwich schools. In order to achieve his aim Oliver needed to show schools how to swap(交换)cheap processed meals , which were high in saturated fat(饱和脂肪),salt , and sugar , for healthier options.
Now,research at the Institute for Social and Economic Research(ISER)has shown that Oliver's experiment did not only help pupils eat more healthily,it also resulted in them performing better at school in English and Science and in helping schools reduce their rates of absenteeism(缺勤).The ISER study, carried out by Michele Belol and Jonathan James, showed"substantial"positive effects, with the performance of 1 1 -year-old pupils eating Oliver's meals improving by up to 8% in Science and by as much as 6% in English. In addition, the number of children having authorized absences for sickness since 2004 showed a 14% decrease.
The ISER study analysed the academic test results of more than 13,000 children in Greenwich between 2002 and 2007 to evaluate the impact of Oliver's healthier meals on school performance.Pupils who sat exams in 2006-2007 had been on the new diet for at least 12 months, and the researchers found that the number of pupils reaching higher levels of achievement had clearly risen. The study also compared the results of the schools in Greenwich with those of pupils of the same age in seven other London areas who did not eat the meals created by Oliver. The researchers were surprised by the speed of improvements in the Greenwich pupils. They could find no other explanation for the results except for the healthier and more nutritious meals created by Oliver.
Commenting on ISER's findings,Oliver said he felt the research proved that he was right in his decision to remove fatty processed food and replace it with nutrient-rich(营养的)foods such as coconut (椰子),fish, and broccoli(花椰菜).He commented that “we could see that it made them calmer and therefore able to learn”.

  • 第12题:

    问答题
Practice 2 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: Some people think that the detailed criminal description on newspaper and TV has bad influences, so this kind of information should be restricted on the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
Whenever we turn on TV or read a newspaper, more often than not we can read a lengthy description of atrocious crime, which has become so-called features of modern media. I, as one of common readers, advocate the proposal that such reports should be strictly controlled, if no abolished.
Alarmingly, those criminal descriptions wield adverse influence on audience, especially fragile youngsters. Due to vulnerable mentality and lack of ample experience, upon contacting violent programmes, those kids are tempted to follow suit, thus breaking the law and such juvenile delinquencies are too often to be ignored. If this trend is out of control, then more teenagers will fall victim to those evil reports.
Moreover, numerous would-be criminals can learn skills of committing crimes from similar cases so the police find it more formidable to crack down on crimes efficiently. Although the original purpose of crime description is to warn people against offenses and teach them valuable lessons, the fact is that there, indeed, exists a discrepancy between what is desired and what is achieved. The latest research reveals that some habitual law-breakers have access to criminal skills and even the police’s detective methods from TV programmes and newspaper stories about crimes. By contrast, if we restrict strictly the programmes of tackling criminal cases, the ways employed by the police to combat crimes will be kept as the top secret, and it is out of the question to be disclosed to the public, especially those potential offenders.
Granted, criminal content, which is not a usual experience for commons, can enhance the TV rating substantially. Satisfying people’s curiosity and adding varieties to choices, those programmes can always attract more audience. As for me, however, the overwhelming detriments have overshadowed whatever benefits.
Overall, no matter what excuse media can find for detailed criminal description, there should be a strict regulation to limit such broadcasting. Government and relevant organizations should cooperate fully, guaranteeing healthier circumstances.

    DNA Fingerprinting

DNA is the genetic material found within the cell nuclei of all living things. In mammals(哺乳动物)
the strands of DNA are grouped into structures called chromosomes(染色体).With the exception of identical
twins, the complete DNA of each individual is unique.
DNA fingerprinting is sometimes called DNA typing. It is a method of identification that compares bits
of DNA.A DAN fingerprint is constructed by first drawing out a DNA sample from body tissue or fluid such
as hair , blood,or saliva(唾液).The sample is then segmented using enzymes(酶),and the segments are
arranged by size. The segments are marked with probes and exposed on X-ray film, where they form a pat-
tern of black bars一the DNA fingerprint. If the DNA fingerprints produced from two different samples match,
the two samples probably came from the same person.
DNA fingerprinting was first developed as an identification technique in 1985.Originally used to detect
the presence of genetic diseases,it soon came to be used in criminal investigations and legal affairs. The first
criminal conviction based on DNA evidence in the United States occurred in 1988.In criminal investiga-
tions,DNA fingerprints derived from evidence collected at the crime scene are compared to the DNA finger-
prints of suspects.Generally, courts have accepted the reliability of DNA testing and admitted DNA test re-
sults into evidence. However,DNA fingerprinting is controversial in a number of areas:the accuracy of the
results, the cost of testing, and the possible misuse of the technique.
The accuracy of DNA fingerprinting has been challenged for several reasons. First, because DNA segments
rather than complete DNA strands are"fingerprinted";a DNA fingerprint may not be unique;large-scale
research to confirm the uniqueness of DNA fingerprinting.test results has not been conducted. In addition,
DNA fingerprinting is often done in private laboratories that may not follow uniform testing standards and
quality controls. Also, since human beings must interpret the test, human error could lead to false results.
DNA fingerprinting is expensive.Suspects who are unable to provide their own DNA to experts may not
be able to successfully defend themselves against charges based on DNA evidence.
Widespread use of DNA testing for identification purposes may lead to the establishment of a DNA
    fingerprint database.

    ‘Feed Me Better'

The number of pupils who asked for sick leave decreased.
    A:Right
    B:Wrong
    C:Not mentioned

    答案:A

    问答题
Though euthanasia has been approved legally in some countries such as in Holland, it is still not widely accepted by many Chinese. Should euthanasia be carried out? Does a terminally ill patient have the right to die? Write a composition of about 400 words on the following topic, expressing your views. THE RIGHT TO DIE In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

    正确答案:
THE RIGHT TO DIE One of the dilemmas that people face in society today is euthanasia, or mercy killing. Many young people are in an unconscious state because of accidents, and many old people are terminally ill because of incurable diseases. They are all kept alive on life-support machines. Although doctors cannot deliberately end a patient's life, mercy killing should be legally used because it could allow a terminally ill patient to end his misery, end the source of deep distress to his family, and end the increasing financial expenses.
Firstly and most importantly, a terminally ill patient has no hope of recovering. Opponents may argue that a person should live with dignity, and nobody can deprive another person of his right to live. However, these people neglect the fact that a terminally ill patient can never lead a normal life because he needs a life-support machine to breathe and a feeding tube to eat. A terminally ill patient is more dead than alive and will never get well again. No one can see such a life as a life with dignity.
Secondly, the family of the patient suffer. Since the nurses can only give the terminally ill patient minimum care, the family must spend endless time caring for the special needs of their loved one. For example, when the patient is conscious, they need to be interacting with him by talking to and touching him. Even if the patient is in a coma, they also have to be present with the patient. So it is unbearable to expect the whole family to watch the patient lying in a hospital bed in great pain, unable to do anything for him.
Lastly, medical treatment is too expensive. Although doctors should try their best to save a patient's life regardless of the high medical costs, it is really a waste to spend so much money on a patient whose condition will never improve. The costs of a hospital room, medicines and medical tests are all quite high, which often become the long-standing burden of the family.
It can be concluded that mercy killing should be carried out when the condition of the patient is critical, the patient's family members are in mental torture, and the medical costs skyrocket.

    问答题
Recently many cities have built university towns in suburbs and relocated many universities from downtown area to these newly built campuses. What do you think may be some of the major results of such arrangement? Write a composition of about 400 words to discuss your opinion. You may talk about both positive and negative ones. The title of the article has been supplied to you. Results of Building University Towns In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

    正确答案:
Results of Building University Towns As education has come to be viewed as one of the bases for a nation's power, it has attracted more and more attention in the new century. One way that government tries to support education is to build university towns. In the past few years, cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Guangzhou have all built university towns, some even building more towns to host large numbers of universities in the area. This new arrangement naturally has led to many consequences, some being positive, some not. In my opinion, there are mainly three major results worth discussing.
Firstly, building university towns improves teaching facilities for universities. In the past, most universities occupied only a small piece of land in downtown area. The classrooms are old and small, and teaching equipment is out-dated. But after moving to university towns, all the universities certainly have a much larger campus, together with new buildings and newly-purchased equipment. Take my university for an example. Before moving to the new campus, it had a campus of only about 200 mu, and usually three to four colleges crammed in the same building. Now the new campus is as large as 900 mu, and every college has its own building. Besides, there are more computer labs and classrooms with multi-media equipment. In this sense, moving to the university towns is undoubtedly a progress for the school.
Secondly, building university towns can offer students a better study environment. We all know that students are supposed to focus their mind on study, but if the school is located in downtown areas, there may be too many things to distract them. For example, girls may spend much time window shopping, and boys may spend more time watching movies. But university towns can solve this problem. On the one hand, these towns are usually located in suburbs. It is very inconvenient to go window shopping, so students are forced to focus on study. On the other hand, universities provide students with very good study facilities, such as library, reading room, and computer lab. Many teachers find that the students are studying harder than they did in old campus.
Of course, there are some problems with building university towns, the most serious one is traffic problem. As university towns are located from 20 to 50 km away from cities, it may take about one hour to go there. Students have to spend more time and money when they go to the city, and teachers have to spend more time traveling to and from the suburban campuses. Remote location also means that schools have to spend more on traffic than in the past, and this expense may be considerably big for some universities.
All in all, although there may be inconveniences, building university towns can be very beneficial for universities and students. If there were no university towns, most schools would still stay in their narrow space, and teach students in small classrooms with worn out equipment. In that case, there cannot be much improvement for education, in its real sense.
